Alexandrite Pendant

A gorgeous alexandrite pendant is the epitome of luxury. As one of the most rare and expensive gemstones on the planet today, if you even find a genuine alexandrite pendant, you'll be fortunate. Since it was discovered, only the very rich and royalty have owned large alexandrite gemstones.

Alexandrite is the birthstone for June, and many women born in that month wear simulated alexandrite birth stone pendants. A quality lab-created alexandrite can be just as beautiful as the real thing.

Jewellery lovers have been crazy about alexandrite since its discovery in 1830 on a in Russian mountainside. Prized for its ability to drastically change color from red to green, the new gemstone  was immediately made into jewelry, including alexandrite pendants, for Russian royalty.

Genuine alexandrite completely changes color when exposed to sunlight, from bright red to bright green. Although many alexandrite rings today are marketed as genuine stones, most of them are simply color-changing chrysoberyl. They generally will not change color as dramatically as real alexandrite or don't change from red to green.

A one-carat alexandrite ring, if you can even find it, will retail for at least $15,000, and the extremely rare multi-carat gems will go for up $100,000 per carat! Even the color-changing chrysoberyls are very rare and expensive.

If you can buy a natural alexandrite pendant, be sure to check its ability to change color. The more complete the color change, the more valuable the gemstone.

Both genuine and lab-created alexandrite pendants are easy to keep beautiful for generations. Since they are relatively hard, alexandrite jewelleries are not susceptable to to cracks, scratches or chips. Your alexandrite pendant can be cleaned with commercial jewelry cleaner.
