Ammonites are extinct marine animals under the cephalopod subclass Ammonoidea. They existed in the oceans during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras around 400 to 65 million years ago and became extinct with the dinosaurs caused by catastrophic events. Ammonites are very relevant and useful in the study of the earth's history.
