Gemstone cuts versus cabochon: Which is for you?
Email This Article To A Friend

Pick your stone gem-cut or cabochon?  If you are like many women, you probably gravitate toward one or the other.  But what is the difference, and which style of stone is for you?

Any stone with facets is a gem-cut.  Many of our pieces feature citrine, peridot, blue topaz, amethyst, emerald, sapphire, ruby and garnet jewelry in gem cuts. Another beautiful piece is our brilliant-cut iolite pendant.  Another lovely gem-cut piece is our brilliant-cut garnet earrings.

Most women own at least one gem-cut jewelry piece typically her engagement ring or a family heirloom.  Gem- cut jewelry sparkles in the light and is favored among women who wear classic styles.  Many women consider gem cut jewelry as their “dress up” accessories.

However, today cabochon stones can be as dressy as their gem-cut counterparts.  Cabochons are stones that are polished to reflect their natural beauty.  They also include stones that display an inner fire like opals.  Most stones that can be gem-cut, produce incredibly beautiful cabochons.  Take, for instance, our amazing ruby cabochon rings and pendantsAquamarine cabochons, found in our earrings and pendants, are a soft sea green.  Our African amethyst earrings are as stunning as some of their gem-cut counterparts.

Some stones, such as onyx, moonstone, labradorite, coral, jade and rose quartz are only worn as cabochons.  Some of our most amazing stones, like the incredible naturally green and orange unakite and all types of precious jasper, are worn in their natural splendor.  Cabochons have traditionally been worn by women who sport a more casual wardrobe, but many of these fancy stones are striking enough to wear to the office or out on the town.

Fashion forward women are marrying their gem-cut stones and cabochons together.  Our turquoise, moonstone, amber and gem-cut amethyst bracelet is a great example.  Try one of our mixed pieces, they are great bridge pieces between your favorite gem-cut and cabochon jewelry.
