How to determine a gemstone’s quality

It’s difficult to know sometimes how to know if you’re getting value for the amount of money you spend on gemstone jewelry. At JE Gem, our designers only work with the best quality stones. That’s what makes our jewelry different gem quality is first and foremost.

Most jewelry pieces you buy in a store or on television shopping channels are designed and manufactured based on large quantities of stones. We take the opposite approach. We scour the gem mines to find a perfect stone. Our designers create a setting to showcase the stone’s beauty. You’ll have a custom made, one-of-a-kind piece. In the jewelry industry, gemstone quality is evaluated according to the color, clarity, cut and gram weight.

Color is by far the most important value factor. If you are considering a gem cut stone, like an amethyst, peridot or citrine, look for vibrant, rich colors. Those stones are the most valuable. You’ll never see washed out looking stones at JE Gem. Color is important in cabochon stones, too. Take our moonstone jewelry, for example. The colors are vivid with an intense inner fire. In the case of our tourmaline pieces, you’ll only find the most clear, crisp colors.

Clarity is the perhaps the second most important value factor. Gem cut stones, like garnet and smoky quartz pieces, should be clear and have no inclusions. A highly prized gem cut stone is one that you can see through. This means it will capture the light and look like a million bucks when you wear it.

Cabochons are highly valued by their inclusions. Our spider veined turquoise is a perfect example. Inclusions in our jasper jewelry give it the patterns, swirls and textured look that make them highly sought after gems. Next is cut. A quality cut gemstone will dramatically reflect light. Even cabochons, like our checkerboard onyx pieces, are sometimes gem cut to increase the amount of sparkle your jewelry will have.

Gram weight is also important. We clearly state the gram weight of all of our pieces. Large stones with superior color, clarity and cut are not only more valuable, but ones you’ll choose to wear over and over again!
